ABSTRACT:
The education system in India puts more prominence on the theoretical knowledge than the practical knowledge. Most of the students in India right from their beginning of their education they are forced to mug up the things rather than having free thoughts so stress will be more in this education system. I think we are not lacking in any things but when I find the international syllabus and curriculum sadly lacking in so many things. One good thing in international curriculum is children are made to think on their right from kindergarten. They are given many activities where they have to use their minds and coordination skills and also whatever they were taught is done in the form of practical activities. While Indian education system is more bookish and children although study various subjects and cover many topics in depth but they didn’t don’t have practical exposure. By introducing practical knowledge it makes more interesting and also enables the children to develop thinking and analytical skills.

Here in this project we will discuss about:
The consequences of pressure face by students in Indian education system?
Do the students in India commit suicides when they fail in exams?
What do you think the reasons behind these suicides?
What are the possible solutions?
Conclusions are based purely on the following survey:
1. Societies pressure
2. Low self esteem
3. Examination stress
4. Educational system in India
5. Pressure from the parents and the teachers
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:
In my investigation report a survey is conducted among the students on Consequences of academic pressure in Indian education system and increase in suicides or suicidal thoughts due to increase in academic pressure.
Methods for researching the problem:
In order to investigate a report we have different types of methods for researching the problem.
1. Direct observation
2. Questionnaire surveys
Direct observation:
Here in direct observation there are different types of approaches which depend on the participation of the observer.
Complete participant:
In this participant, observer gathers the data by taking part in the daily life. It is a characteristic type of research which uses different techniques like informant interviewing, respondent interviewing, and document analysis.
Participant-Observer:
In this, person has to play dual roles like he/she must have to participate in the group and also observe the process of group at same time. Participant -observer must follow the following steps
1. Observing the group
2. Giving and receiving the feedback to the group members
3. Setting goals for improvement
4. Changing the behavior in next meeting
5. Repeating the process in every group of which participant-observer is parcipated
Here first observer has to select the members of the group in which he/she has to record the behavior and then summarize the behavior of the group and lastly present a feedback to the group.
.Non-participant Known Observer:
Here the observer observes the group without participating and interacting without the group. Observer is an eavesdropper; observer observes the group without their knowledge that is being observed. Here sometimes the data collected may be the invalid.
Unknown observer:
In this the observer is unknown in the group and in these hidden cameras, or tapes are used. No one in the group knows the presence of the observer.
Questionnaire surveys:
Survey is conducted on the questions which has framed and it is self-administrated, here data is collected from people on their attitude, behavior, beliefs and values. Inorder to frame a questionnaire we must know the content and what format the questions should be taken. The questionnaire must contain the content what you really want to know. Questionnaire can be framed in two ways:
1. Open-ended questions
2. Closed-ended questions
Open-ended questions:
In this, questions are framed when there is no particular answer for that question. When we don’t know all the possible answers for a question. These questions are known as a data collection tool because it provides in-depth information. The main advantage of this type of open-ended questions is respondents can express their feelings, thoughts and are able to explain their answers and a have an opportunity to contradict the feelings. According to researches the disadvantages of open-ended is it is difficult to judge the reliability and validity for the verbal data, and the second disadvantage for this open-ended questions is analzation of data is very difficult, as it generates large amount of data and may be irrelevant data and the last disadvantage is its variability of amount of data collected from respondents.
E.g. What is favorite food?
Closed-ended questions:
In this, questions are framed in which the answer is present in some way, answers can be presented in the form of choices or using numerical code. The main advantages of this close-ended questions is easy to analyse, compare and quantify the responses of respondents, we can answer many questions in a less period and can measure the ability or knowledge, and also it enables the automated data entry and it is fast and easy. Disadvantages in these close-ended questions are respondents don’t have the opportunity to explain their views clearly. And it is limited to some people and requires moderate knowledge over the topic to answer appropriate one. We don’t have detail description over the topic.
e.g., How many years have you worked in your current job?
__< 1 year
__1 to <6 years
__6 to <11 years
__11 years or more
Justification of approach and the method to solve the problem
The problem discussed in the report is about the consequences of academic pressure in Indian education system and the increase in suicide’s and suicidal thoughts in students due to increase in academic pressure.Questionnarie survey is used as a method of approach to solve the problem. In this questionnaire survey method there is of two types
A. Open-ended questions
B. Close-ended questions.
Between these two approaches I have selected close-ended questions as a method of approach to solve the problem. Because it is easy to understand, analyze and quantify the responses of the respondents, In this I will provide the answers in which the respondent need to choose the option and has to express his/her view regarding the question. Like, are students in India facing more pressure in education? If so, students are showing their tendency towards suicide’s and are expressing suicidal thoughts, so in order to answer these types of questions closed-ended questions are the efficient way to know the thoughts, ideas and their opinions to solve the problem.

Agree Disagree
Out of 32, 30[93.7%] have agreed some students end their life in middle due to academic pressure but 2[6.2%] have disagreed with the above statement
The above graph clearly represents the relation between academic pressure and the suicide’s or suicidal thoughts in the students. A sample of data is collected among the individuals in the university so as to determine the increase in percentage of suicides due to increase in academic pressure. India’s education system gives more prominence and importance to theory than practical. Students memorize what they had studied and just blurt out everything on paper in order to get marks. Actually they even don’t have clue on the topic .and in each year the syllabus becomes more vast and tough and the pressure starts here. hence the innovative thinking, problem solving and capable of useful actions is lacking in Indian education system .Since the education system in India is purely based on marks, the effect of parents and social pressure to perform well in examination on students is more. Constant stress is cited and it is the reason why most school students are unable to cope up the education.
Growing completion among the peers, Fear of failure in examination and parent’s pressure are the most common reasons why the students end up their lives. Over the sample of data collected 71.8% have agreed that there is pressure in Indian education system and 93.7% have agreed suicides are more in students due to this academic pressure. On the Other hand 28.1% have agreed that there is no academic pressure in Indian education system and 6.2% have agreed that there are no suicide’s.
Co-relation between academic pressure and sucides or sucidal thoughts:
The above graph demonstrates the co-relation between the academic pressure and the suicide’s over the students. Suicide rate has increased due to tremendous increase in academic pressure. India stands highest in teenage suicides; Statistics reveal that suicides rates among teens increase almost 300 percent. People aged 29 or below are committing suicide every day and 51% of suicide victims are graduates, younger and the main reason for the self-harm is due to low-self-esteem, parents pressure, societies pressure over the student in order to score highly.
The above graphical representation presents the thoughts, ideas and attitude of the individuals in the university on academic pressure and self-harm. Since every question is related to the academic pressure where an individual has to be answered
Discussion of threats to the validity of result:
According to the survey conducted, based on the samples taken by me on consequences of academic pressure and its influence over the students got valid results which I expected because it is related to the truth about the real world, since most of the students in India are facing academic pressure right from their childhood, as they are forced to mug up rather having free thoughts due to this type of education system creative, innovative thinking, problem solving ability are lacking. One of the major threat to the validity of the result is the way the respondents response to the questionnaires.
Conclusion and recommendations to solve the problem:
The investigation report represents that Indian education system has more academic pressure which leads to self-harm of the students has been satisfied with the hypothesis.
Since the present education system is purely marks oriented so, it creates high pressure over the students .Inorder to reduce academic pressure we have to introduce Grading system of education. A survey is conducted among the individuals in the university so as to know their views in introducing grading system of education to reduce the academic pressure over the students.
On a sample of 32,81.2% has agreed for adopting grading system of education and 18.7% are satisfied with the present marks oriented education system. Some of the modifications has to be done in order to reduce these suicidal thoughts over the students and we have to adopt practical methodology along with course curriculum. Technology based learning should be adopted in schools and colleges. Selection of the subjects must be left to the student intrest rather than enforcing them to take standardized subjects.course books should be more effective and it should be learning oriented rather than contextual. This must be related to real life.
