The Impact of Social Media

People use social media for many things, such as socializing, finding and sharing information, shopping, or simply as a distraction from daily life. Today, people use Snapchat to message each other rather than regular text messaging. We’re very into out phones these days and it can be a good and bad thing. Taking into consideration that social media can change the way one thinks about a certain topic, Lukianoff and Haidt, the authors of The Coddling of the American Mind, and Adrian Chen, the author of Unfollow, both have some things to say about this statement. Lukianoff and Haidt explain in the article that social media is a gateway to joining things such as gangs and/or petitions. It’s a place where you can go to see other peoples views and can maybe or maybe not change your mind on your own views. In Chen’s article, it tells about a girl named Megan Phelps-Roper who decided to go on social media for once in her life and put her views out there. When she starts getting feedback on her views, positive and negative, she starts rethinking her own views and changes her perspective on things. A lot of people don’t know the impact social media can have on one person, good or bad.  Taking this into account, even though social media can change someones’ daily life in a positive way, social media can change a person’s views to think the wrong idea of a certain aspect as well.

We as a whole realize that everybody is a result of their own actions in their environment. Indirect life influences, impacts, and environment can further change our behavior. Web-based social networking, as of now, exceptionally impacts our every day lives. Due to this conclusion, how enormous of a job does organizing through web based life play into our lives? Possibly more than any of us understand. The article Unfollow by Adrian Chen says it all. It’s about the story of Megan Phelps-Roper who tells her incentive of life inside America’s most questionable church, Westboro Baptist Church, and portrays how discussions on Twitter were vital to her choice to leave it. In this phenomenal article, she shares her own involvement of outrageous polarization, alongside some sharp ways we can figure out how to effectively connect transversal over ideological lines. “She had a hard time believing in aspects of the future foretold by some church members, like the idea that they would soon be living in pink caves in Jordan. “We were making specific predictions about things without having, in my mind, sufficient scriptural support,” she said” (Adrian Chen 78). While informal communities are frequently intended to be generally obtainable, many draw in homogeneous populations at first, so it isn’t astonishing to discover gatherings utilizing destinations to isolate themselves by nationality, age, instructive level, or different elements that ordinarily fragment society, regardless of whether that was not the aim.

Its an obvious fact that internet based life platforms are moving human practices, tendencies and collaborations everywhere throughout the world. Individuals are progressively ready to utilize computerized profiles of themselves to broaden or rearrange their physical appearances, and in this way control their social and professional world for a wide range of advantages and motivating forces such as the possibility of meeting a future wife, the draw of marked cash from sponsors, the endorphin-hit of preferences and offers, and pursue votes and political power. “Social media makes it extraordinarily easy to join crusades, express solidarity and outrage, and shun traitors. Facebook was founded in 2004, and since 2006 it has allowed children as young as 13 to join. This means that the first wave of students who spent all their teen years using Facebook reached college in 2011, and graduated from college only this year” (Lukianoff and Haidt 265). Children tend to learn from what they see around them or who they hang around with. Thus, being continually exposed to media induced violence can result in a behavior where they would likely use violence to solve their everyday problems.

Every one of us spends excessively long discussing ourselves online. This is normal. We’re sharing our lives, the high points and low points and the drama in our lives with individuals we think will protect our opinions. People online, for the most part, care and will let you know so by commenting on posts you’ve made or by saying it out loud if you are their in person. They will tune in to what you need to state and help you manage any issues you might confront. “These first true “social-media natives” may be different from members of previous generations in how they go about sharing their moral judgments and supporting one another in moral campaigns and conflicts” (Lukianoff and Haidt 265). Am example of this from my personal experience is me and my mom. When I go onto a website and post something, such as posting a picture on Instagram, she doesn’t understand the comments I get such as the heart emojis and people saying “ damn, you’re cute.” It’s a new generation from me and her, we’re different. The fact of the matter is that by us all sharing our encounters, both great and terrible, on long range informal communication platforms such as Twitter, like Megan Phelps-Roper did, we are ready to sympathize with one another. A companion may have experienced a comparable difficulty that you are experiencing at the moment and they will have the option to help you overcome it. You’ll additionally have the option to see with your own eyes that they made it out of the opposite side, that this issue didn’t wreck them, and that they are maybe better for the experience, which is the reason online networking is beneficial for you, in difference to the argument.

All in all, it’s clear that in many areas, not enough is known yet to draw many strong conclusions. However, the evidence does point one way: social media affects people differently, depending on who we talk to and how we talk to other people. Many individuals don’t have the greatest idea about the effect web based life can have on one individual, fortunate or unfortunate. Considering this, despite the fact that online networking can change someones’ every day life in a constructive manner, internet based life can change an individual’s perspectives to think an unsuitable opinions of a specific angle.
